DC TOBACCO FREE COALITION

Welcome to the DC Tobacco Free Coalition website, a partnership of the DC Tobacco Free Coalition and the DC Department of Health. In December 2006, the DC Council allocated a generous portion of the tobacco settlement funds to implement a comprehensive tobacco cessation and prevention program for DC residents in its commitment to reduce the death and disease caused by tobacco use.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death killing over 700 DC residents each year and can cause a significant decline in the quality of life the longer you smoke. Smoking also affects the entire family when a family member smokes around them, which also causes serious health consequences for nonsmoking family members, especially young children. DCTFC is committed to making sure all DC residents who smoke have access to smoking cessation treatments so they can stay quit for good. The DCTFC also promotes smoke-free homes and cars to protect our children.

WHO WE ARE

We are a coalition of DC based faith and community based organizations and individual partners working together to educate the community of the effects and the harm of tobacco and second hand smoke. The Coalition’s mission is to improve the health of the District of Columbia residents by decreasing the morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco use and exposure through education, public policy, and advocacy using culturally & linguistically competent approaches. The Coalition is composed of three Executive Officers, the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and four committee chairs, which include: Program, Advocacy and Policy, Marketing Communications and Sustainability.

WHAT WE DO

We assist all DCTFC partners in planning, coordinating, designing and executing programs, projects and interventions that eliminate exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, prevent youth initiation, promote smoking cessation, and identify and eliminate disparities among specific populations. We work to build partnerships representing the diverse populations residing in the District of Columbia and to heighten awareness of the dangers of tobacco use through education. Collectively and collaboratively, we advocate for Tobacco Settlement funds to be used for funding tobacco control in the District.
