Smoking/Vaping and COVID-19

We can win the fight against smoking/vaping and COVID-19. The Tobacco Prevention Toolkit from Stanford is an excellent tool to help us do it. It’s for educators and health advocates looking for ways to educate youth and young adults about the dangers of tobacco, smoking or vaping. It’s for organizations looking for accessible facts on how tobacco and nictotine-containing products increase coronavirus risks. It’s for parents who want to learn more about vaping and how to protect their kids.

The Toolkit offers a wealth of accessible education modules for teaching youth about tobacco and the real life health dangers associated with its use. The “theory-based and evidence-informed resources” in the toolkit were created by educators, parents, and researchers. Aimed at preventing middle and high school students’ use of tobacco and nicotine, it’s a kit that can be used to educate an older audience too.

A recent addition to the toolkit website is a lesson module on the link between smoking/vaping and coronavirus. "Going Smoke-free or Vape-free: Reducing Your Risks for COVID-19" includes a lesson plan and fact sheet.

The materials, including the fact sheet, use explainer infographics and reference California Quit Line information. They are ready for download in multiple languages: English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese. There is also a sharable English language explainer video that animates the fact sheet information.

For those of us not in California, the toolkit offers an editable English language version of the fact sheet (you'll need Powerpoint to make edits). You can download it and add custom resource information. We've adapted the fact sheet and added DC Quitline information for local use. If you need help accesing any of this information, contact DC Tobacco Free Coalition at info@dctfc.org
