“DC Calls It Quits Week” will be back in 2019

Coalition announces the cancellation of 2018 DC Calls It Quits Week activities,
looks forward to a successful awareness campaign next year

(Washington, DC) – September 24, 2018 – With deepest regrets, the DC Tobacco Free Coalition announces that its planned “DC Calls It Quits Week” awareness events are cancelled. Originally scheduled for September 24th through the 28th, this year’s Coalition-sponsored activities suffered from a shortage of sponsors and volunteers needed to deliver impactful events for tobacco control. The decision to cancel was a difficult one. Organizers and volunteers have worked behind the scenes for several months planning for the week of tobacco control community events and the annual summit.

“I want to extend a sincere apology to those who volunteered and pledged their support to this year’s DC Calls It Quits Week, and to everyone who was looking forward to participating in it,” said Rolando Andrewn, Chair of the Coalition. “Many tireless volunteers and generous supporters worked so hard to try to make DC Calls It Quits happen this year. We are very grateful to them, and we are especially grateful for the vital continued support of the DC Department of Health, which funds the Coalition.”

The good news is that a “DC Calls It Quits Week” is already in the works for 2019. The Coalition is redoubling its efforts to bring on board supporters and sponsors early for next year’s week of activities. With time to build year-round support, the Coalition is working hard to be in a stronger position to facilitate this important District-wide public health awareness campaign next year. “The first official planning meeting for 2019 is scheduled for this December,” explained Andrewn. “I encourage everyone to please sign up now to help make the 2019 DC Calls It Quits a great success.”
